The Back Story
Our story began like so many others do with me (Alan), wandering confused into the room of somebody I had never met before to help a bunch of other people I’ve never met. I had just moved to Rhode Island and I lived across the street from a Unitarian universalist church. My dad (Mark) later told me he picked the apartment exclusively based on its proximity, and I guess it ended up working out. The church participated in the Providence pride parade every year and Katarina’s mom (Arte) provided the camper van that was used as their float. Katarina almost had to work that day but I’m glad that she ended up having the day off. So she and her gaggle of rainbow fairy brethren came spilling out of said van to the home of the UU minister, James Ford.
There we spent the afternoon decorating the van, talking about all our favorite nerd stuff, including Doctor Who, Star Trek and Monty Python. At the parade I told her that while she’s not the Spanish inquisition, I’d let her interrogate me over dinner any day. She smiled at me, then ran away without a word.
The Proposal
Later. I found out that she had run to find her best friend Madison. Katarina asked Madison in a panic “A guy just asked me out, what do I do?” Madison asked “Well do you want to go out with him?” “Yeah, he’s cute!” replied Katarina. After an incredulous pause, Madison advised “Well then go say yes!” It dawned on Katarina, who said “Thanks! My brain snapped and I forgot how to say Yes!”
At the end of the night. I tried one last time and said would you like to go to dinner and she confidently said, thanks to Madison’s coaching, “Yes “. And the rest is history.
The Wedding Party
